What it includes

What the Archive includes… and what it does not

The archive provides comprehensive information about the productions of the Coconut Grove Playhouse from 1986 through 2006, the period not covered in Carol Cohan’s book “Broadway by the Bay.” Where it was possible to locate, there is information (in lesser detail) on productions going back to 1956, when the Playhouse became a major regional theater.

Programs, cast, key contributors, and play summaries have been digitized for all productions from 1986 to 2006. For most of these productions there are also production photographs, photographs of actors, excerpts from newspaper articles, and recorded comments from Arnold Mittelman, the Playhouse’s producing artistic director during this period.

This archive’s main focus is the last era of the Playhouse, 1985-2006. The productions from 1956 to 1985 are not documented to the same extent. Where possible, though, the archive has been enriched by digitizing the available information from that period.

While there has been and continues to be great interest in the architecture, history, and future development of the Playhouse’s building and property, the archive does not address this aspect of the Playhouse’s history. The focus here is entirely on the productions, the creators, the performers, and the producing and artistic leadership.
